There are three posts on learned helplessness in this blog you might read. In conjunction with these, you might explore, through journaling, your thoughts and feelings on how to move past this challenging state using these prompts:
- What messages have you received that have influenced any sense of learned helplessness?
- What work-related payoffs do you experience related to learned helplessness?
- Reflect on recent work situations where you felt helpless or lacked control. What patterns do you notice in your thoughts and behaviours during these moments? Are there recurring themes or triggers?
- Analyze your internal dialogue during challenging times at work. What are the automatic thoughts that contribute to feelings of helplessness? How might you reframe these thoughts to foster a more optimistic and empowered mindset?
- Recall working moments when you successfully navigated challenges or overcame obstacles. What strengths, skills, or support systems did you utilize? How can you apply these lessons to current situations where you feel helpless?
- Define specific, achievable work-related goals for yourself. Break them down into manageable steps. How can focusing on these goals shift your mindset from helplessness to a sense of purpose and accomplishment?
- Explore your self-talk during moments of perceived work-related failure. How can you cultivate self-compassion and treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend facing a similar situation?
- Develop a list of positive affirmations that challenge the belief of helplessness. What empowering statements can you repeat to yourself in difficult times to reinforce a sense of control and capability?
